DDR4 memory running under spec speed?

Hello forum,

I just bought a new PC with asus prime x470-pro motherboard, AMD 2700X CPU and Corsair Vengeance 32GB DDR4 3000MHz Memory Kit 2x 16GB.

Issue I have straight from start is that the memory only seems to run @2133MHz. I'm not very good with PC stuff so could be something I haven't realised. Any help is much appreciated!

Regards,

Did you buy it pre-configured? 2133 is the stock speed for DDR4 and all higher speeds are set up manually or with a profile. This is called XMP for Intel, or I think DOCP for AMD? Basically you'll need to configure the RAM speeds in the BIOS, either by selecting a specific speed or telling it to auto-configure with the profile.

Interesting, I had no idea! I build it from parts and what you said worked, thank you! Just wondering if I can push it to 3000MHz without issues, in old days CPU multiplier had to match mem settings etc, no idea how it is today or if I can just simply change it?

Things are more independent now :) With memory, you adjust the clock speed and then the timings (CAS latency, etc). So a faster clock might need looser timings, whereas a slower clock could allow tighter timings on the latency. Experimentation is good, and keep notes! There are guides online too.
