I was under the impression that DDR4 is the current / new standard in PCs and DDR5 is coming next year or 2022.

However I never noticed that the PS5 and Xbox series X consoles are shipping with DDR6.
PS5 16GB GDDR6/256-bit, Xbox-X 10 GB GDDR6.

Is this the RAM or GPU memory. Are consoles ahead of PC components for the first time ever?

Most likely it's the GPU memory. I'm not well versed in the next gen consoles so take that with a pinch of salt.

It's the same memory as is used on GPU's. Nothing stops you using a GDDR memory controller on a CPU so they do in the consoles. The Xbox one X and PS4 both used GDDR5 for the whole memory pool too, so it's not even really a new development on that front.

OK, so it's 16GB pooled system RAM and the GPU uses what it needs from this.
But still 16GB of GDDR6 memory from what im seeing online everywhere (not GDDR5)
