Who has had the ****** ? Im tempted as im going custom loop over next few days. However should i delid and direct cool ? Or replace the paste with somthing better? Im fairly handy and have the patience of a saint with this kind of thing. However still worried i might turn it into a expensive ornament.

Any tips ? What paste do you all use when doing this open heart surgery. Lots of guides on the net making it look quite easy.

It's fairly straightforward, but don't even think about it if you can't afford to replace it should the worst happen.

Mehif it dies it dies i will have to get another. I would kick myself and have to make sure he Mrs does not find out ;) but its not the end of the world if i need to get another. Just want to get the maximum out of this chip tbh.

I don't think it's worth to buy another one "in case" this one breaks..

But if you;re willing to do it, I would suggest MSI Z97 XPower AC motherboard with Delid Die Guard which will surely perform better than if you would get the lid back on it with some fresh thermal paste.

I would see what temps ya get first without delidding, might turn out you have a nice cool chip, i was getting mid 80s at 1.25v. I read somewhere that these chips were suppose to have better TIM hmm. Getting mid 60s with just AS5 now, im sure once i get the time to stick some liquid pro on its will be back down into the 40s where my 3570k used to be after i did it.

I stuffed my chip delidding, once ya have done it plenty of times ya start to think it cant go wrong, but i rushed it this time, knife slipped and knocked some capacitors off. If ya take your time and dont let the knife/razor go further in than 3 or 4 mm then ya should be ok.

Have a look at some of the youtube vids of people doing it and make note of where the capacitors are close to the edge of the Lid and just be more carefull on them edges.

Stuck some liquid pro in now and im getting 46 degrees at 1.25v now, 52 degrees at 1.3v using prime95. Well worth the effort if ya willing to risk it.

Yeah ive been dilidding CPUs since they started with the silly heat spreaders on the AMD FX series. As long as ya take it slow its fine. Back then ya always direct Die cooled, but i always made a packer to lvl the CPU surface with the Die to reduce the risk of crushing it. With liquid pro been so good it saves ya hassel and ya can just use the heat spreader to protect it instead.

it depends what u aim for mate :)

If u want to run cooler + some extra voltage = more OC then delid it.

When I delided mine it dropped the temps by 10C on average. I used Coollaboratory Liquid Ultra on the core+Gelid GC eXtreme between IHS and cooler. This was on air using Noctua NH-D15.

Then I switched to high quality custom water system, using "direct-die cooling" and Coollaboratory Liquid PRO.
It dropped my temps by another 25C on average and providing more room for OC.

On air(delided+CL ultra/Gelid GC eX) I could "only" do 4.8G_1.3v which is impressive IMO:cool:
On custom water(delided+direct die+CL PRO) I can do 4.8G_1.22v, 4.9G_1.29v and amazing magic 5G_1.415v (60-65C max).

Its worth it.... ;)

Yes, yes it is :)

Why would you not direct die cool if you have gone to the trouble of taking thr lid off ?

whats the down side to direct die cooling, seems if im going to take the lid off i might as well direct die cool it?

I've seen people report as low as 2c. Delidding is where the biggest gain comes from, 20c being quite normal.

I tried direct die, it gained no difference over liquid pro and ihs, but if ya dont wanna use liquid pro it might be the better option.
