Looks like my 5year old 1gb 4870 has given up on me today, I'm looking at upgrading everything early next year (currently an e8500, Asus rampage, 4gb) so not planning on spending much, need a card that will run Adobe lightroom mainly, with the odd MW2 game thrown in if possible, seen a few 1gb ati cards around the 20-30 mark, would thee be up to the job?

A 5770/6770 is around the same performance of the 4870 which is capable of playing modern warefare. You might be able to get a geforce 460 1gb which is a lot quicker for that sort of money as well.

770/780 should do the trick, they are only cheap

Cheap? What?

+1 to a second hand 5770/6770 (both are the same cards), 4870 performance so should work fine until your big upgrade. 460 1gb would be better if you can find one within your budget. Googling around though it seems Lightroom is not GPU accelerated...

Have a look at the specs - 6450 has 160 processing cores vs your 4780's 800. Nuff said really :p

2nd hand 5770s are going for around 35-40 quid, maybe less depending on your haggling skills! as said before, near identical performance to the 4870, but consumes less power

The only brand new card that will match the performance of your 4870 would be the 7770, the 6450 doesn't even come close and is not designed for gaming.

As people have said above 5770/6770.

To this day, my 5770 was one of my favourite cards. Saved all my pennies so I could play BC2 with it.

Wow, just goes to show how good an old card can perform.

Personally I'd pick up a used card, get a lot more for your money!
