I picked up a 5Dc back in February which completely took my enjoyment of photography to a whole new level.

Obviously I bought this used, but aside from a short scare in March where the shutter stopped working it's been great :D (shutter problem seemed to fix it self after I pulled the CMOS battery ).

Unfortunately a few days ago, after taking a few snaps for an eBay auction I was listing I found that my SD to CF card adapter would no longer fit in the CF slot. Usually when I stick the card in, there is a satisfying 'clunk' that happens as the card goes down and the card release springs up...neither happened in this case.

Sensibly, I removed the card to check I was putting it in the right way (and I found I was) then in an act of relative stupidity, I proceeded to force the card down into it's hole.

As I applied pressure and the card slowly crawled deeper into it's home the words "OH ****" slipped from my mouth as I realised what was happening.

Lo and behold, I had just bent one of the card slots pins.

Rather than burst into tears over the loss of my beloved camera, I took to Bing
(the unfortunate default search engine on my Surface computer) for a assistance. My search didn't yield much to help me at the time, so after prodding my camera with a toothpick for a few minutes I abandoned the camera in my wardrobe and had a sulk in my new Racecar themed office chair :D.

Sod's Law that this would happen just as we're getting some good whether on the horizon :(.

Today I come to you great forum goers for advice on where to go next with my neutered camera. My mind defaults to a visit to Jessops, but I'd imagine they're not in any position to offer me help anymore :p.

Can you guys recommend a good place to get this fixed (in London or Canterbury)? Or maybe one of you have the know how to do the job correctly? I'm happy to pay of course, but the easier this is on my student wallet the better.

TL;DR
  • Bent pin in my 5D's card slot.
  • Need help getting it fixed.

Any help or recommendation will indeed be appreciated.

Many thanks,

tobs.

You might struggle with the official Canon centres unless the camera is still under Canon support I know I had problems trying to get an older 28-70mm f2.8 fixed. Neither would even service it as Canon had stopped providing support.

You might want to start considering looking for a new camera, a repair cost might be around 50% of the 5Dc value at a guess.

For anyone interested...I did ask a few shops to quote for the repair and at the time, most wanted around £300-£400 for it. A couple years down the line I've purchased a replacement CF module off eBay for £30 and done the job my self. My battery is now nackered and I have no lenses to test the 5D properly, but my CF card is being recognised and my blurry photos are saving to it :), good times.
