So it would appear that my 6700k died. Rebooted my PC yesterday to the system giving 5 post beeps and powering off then repeating the process.

I've reset Cmos
Reseated memory, cpu, all cards etc.

No joy.

MOtherboard is a Gigabyte z170x - Ultra Gaming.

I've ordered a cheap compatible celeron to allow me to test. If it is the CPU thats gone (it's out of warranty), what replacement would you suggest?

Highest the board can go is a 7700k. Given that the system is mainly for gaming and media should I just look at a 7600k and save some cash? (main screen is 4k but I use 1080)

Reason I went i7 when I built was I wanted the system to have the longest possible useful life.

GFX card is a R9390. Plan was to upgrade to something like a 2070 once released and GPU prices drop to something sensible.

What do you think.....

Thanks, my gut says 7700k, but the wallet, and wife say i5!

Lets see if it works with the celeron.

Thanks, have checked and it's in warranty until next year, for some reason I thought I only had 1 year warrany on this one. Will see if the Celeron works in the board and if so raise a RMA with Intel.

Just to update anyone interested, it wasn't the CPU. Or the Motherboard. After much faffing I narrowed it down to a failed DDR4 DIMM. Have raised a ticket with Corsair for an RMA.

Thanks for the help chaps.
