My Connect 3D x800xt PE has suddenly died, it was working perfectly last night and when pc was turned on today, there is no display. I have swapped in a different gpu which I know works and the display showed, so I definitely know its the card, and not the mobo, unfortunately I think the card is out of warranty, which means I'll have to replace it.

If I do have to replace, I am considering getting something else with a bit more power, such as an AGP 7800 GS or the like, but with an AMD 64 3700+, would it make much difference to gaming? (such as in BF2142) or would the CPU be the more limiting factor (I'm on S754, so can't improve CPU without getting a new mobo as well.)

You didn't mention your budget, however if you are considering a 7800 GS, I would recommend throwing that idea out of the window and instead jumping on the X1950 Pro AGP bandwagon.

You get a far better performing card for the price, and also capable of more features, like HDR+AF and a few other bits and pieces.

Yours for 130 pounds give or take a few pence.

Which model ? Pretty much the cheapest I say, 256MB is fine unless you game in very high resolutions, (like 1680x1050 or more).

Hope that helps some.

^^ I can't argue with that and i run a 7800GS+ myself.
Performance wise it will knock your socks off and will be very noticeable.
It was for me and i swapped from an X800pro unlocked 16piper to the 7800GS+ GSH and run a A64 [email protected].
The 1950pro benchys i've read beat my card and are a hundred quid cheaper :( Weren't about when i got my card.
Still chuffed with the 7800GS+ though as my system still steams on happily for an old 939 AGP set up.
One thing i have to say though is after donkeys years on ATI cards & drivers i Much prefer NVid's. You find a set download instal them and pretty much forget about them. With ATi i always seemed to be finding a better compromise.
Maybe i have been lucky but these NVid drivers i have used Love every single game i through at them not just most or some.
Whether that is worth a hundred quid extra though i very much doubt :p

Not to be overly critical here mate but could you use paragraphs there instead of pressing enter after each full stop. Would help let ppl read your post easier. ;)

^^ I'll write how i damn well please.

Edit.
Jesus Christ I cannot believe i took time out when i am watching the Football to help a dude and get critisized for the way i write.

Thanks for the info guys, looks like the 1950 is the one to get. One question though, is there a 256MB version of the sapphire card (as the 512 one is probably pushing my budget a bit)?, though I may get it if I can't find anything else.

Im curious about that too. Theres bound to be one somewhere as a company not making a 256mb version is very unheard of. Make a topic with gibbo in the title and im sure he will reply saying if there is or not and if he can get some for you?

Think I've decided on the x1950 now, but just trying to find out what the difference in performance would be if I got a 256MB version or a 512MB version? I'm thinking about future proofing you see (as I'm interested in getting the next Command and Conquer game and want to be sure I can play it well (I generally run at 1280x1024 or 1600x1200 if I can). Also, can I confirm that my CPU (an AMD 64 3700+) would not limit me for games , should I be safe for a while?

your cpu will be just fine. as for the 256 vs 512 argument, i have no idea. i just got myself a 512mb card as it was the only one available when i bought it. :D

one more thing, I have a Globalwin 450W PSU and have read reports that this card needs quite a bit of power in terms of amps, so I'm wondering, would my PSU be good enough for this.
