Dead CMOS battery?

Over this weekend my dad has been doing some decorating which involved turning off the power through the house a couple of times. When he turns the power back on my pc fires up straight away without the power button being pressed. It doesn't get past the POST because the bios has reverted to the factory default settings. I thought that a dead battery would result in the loss of settings every time I shut the system down. But mine retains settings except with the mains power is lost. New battery time/excuse to upgrade?

If the cmos battery is dying your settings may be retained after shut down but lost should you unplug the power lead. If the battery is totally dead your pc may restart or lose some settings even if the power lead is not unplugged. :)

If your buying a new cmos battery for £1 may as well upgrade at the same time. ;)
