ok so i got a Q6600 from a certain auction site delivered yesterday put it in with the stock cooler + heatsink and it all went wrong on startup :( Blank screen no flashes, no beeps it just powers on all fans going. Funny thing is that i cant shut it down by holding the power button down, have to get the main switch on the PSU.

I know that my PSU is dodgy and I've got one in the post so expecting that real soon, so i was wondering if it was possible that all of this is because of the PSU? or is the CPU definitely dead?

edit: CPU gets warm after i tried it without the heatsink or fan, i kept it on for 5seconds then turned it off.

Why did you even start the system with a PSU you know is dodgy?

Unless you have another PSU or processor to test with who knows which one is at fault now.

does your old chip work ,and what was it

have you reset bios

ok it dosnt work anymore :l it just gets to the screen where it shows my motherboard and then it shuts itself off. It was an intel pentium 4 650 3.4ghz. Nop havnt touched the bios

Exactly. Using a PSU that is dodgy brings all sorts of potential issues and may even blow some of your other components.

Back to OP - CPU could be fine, if you have another compatible 775 system to test it in that would help. When the new PSU arrives you could test it then but if it doesn't work then it could be hard to determine

The PSU is not like dodgy, dodgy but its just starting to show signs that its coming to the end of it's run. Really do hope its the PSU though :l

What model is the motherboard as well? A lot of the older P4 boards will not take newer cpu's. If it's the same board as you stated in your other thread, i have already told you that they are not compatible!!

From the look of the OP's older posts the motherboard is a Asus P5VDC-TVM/S, which is very old and will NOT support a Q6600.

EDIT: D'oh, beaten by a ninja edit! :P

Also, not a good idea to run a chip without a heatsink. You may have now killed that as well!

i was really careful with it and only let it run for 5 seconds to see if there was any heat coming off it because i heard that if it stays cold then its dead :|

so the board only takes intel pentium 4 on 775? :l Thanks for this though so i know that it might not be the CPU :)

Do you have any idea why my old CPU wont work anymore though?

thanks

The board can only take the older P4's chips, What was the old chip being used?
