Dead GFX card or monitor?

Hi,

I'm looking for opinions on the probable cause of the display issues I'm experiencing, shown in the screenies below. I was using the computer this morning with no issues, went to work, and have found it behaving this way since returning home :(

The GFX card is an old soft-modded ATI AIW 9800SE, the monitor is an even older Iiyama VMPro 450 which for the past two months has been exhibiting (for want of a better description) a periodic screen burst - like it's firing an electron at you and it pops (inaudibly) behind the glass. It does this a couple of times per week with medium usage.

I have tried declocking the card, disabling the soft-mod and returning my CPU to default clock with no improvement.

I get the feeling the screenies do not do the problem justice; it's a ***** trying to work on here at the moment. I practically have a green mesh over everything which acts to defocus the entire display.

Unfortunately my chosen solution to purchase a pre-built OcUK O/C rig cannot be funded so I would like to replace the faulty component only.

Advice appreciated.

cables

I know this is probably obvious, but have you checked the cables on both sides?

Also not sure on your hardware setup, but you could try spare or alternative cables.

Eg I have D-sub and DVI inputs on my monitor, and 2 x DVI output on my gfx card. I would try DVI to DVI , DVI to DSUB (cable or with an adapter if you have one) DVI adapter to DSUB to DSUB.

also get a spare monitor

Alternatively try and source a spare monitor, check with a neighbour or a friend. Even if you have to travel with the machine to their place. If it does the same on theirs, you have your next area to investigate.

If you suspect the card, try pick up a 2nd hand card from members market or something (auction site?) and try that out.
