So only when playing path of exile I got this graphics problem (was running fine for 80 hours) and it would result in the gcard not sending a signal to the monitors. Now when i turn my pc on the screen has horizontal noise lines across it and its stuck at a low res. Windows hardware manager gives the error 43 on the gcard.

GTX 570 about 2 years old, 850Watt power supply about 1 year old.

Is it the graphics card? Did the mobo cause it? Anything I can do?

Has there been any recent hardware changes to the system?

Might be worth un-installing and reinstalling the latest graphics card drivers.

Also if the card is around two years old depending on the make it could still be under warranty, if after checking the usual things like everything is connected properly and drivers are up to date and its under warranty then it can obviously be returned for a replacement.

If you have a spare graphics card yourself you can also test if the problem lies with the graphics card or any other part of the system yourself before sending it back.

Ive tried going back a version of nvidia drivers and resetting bios to default and making sure the card is installed correctly but still not fixed.

Is it likely that its the graphics card thats gone? because my brother would really like to use the rest of the machine.

I get this displayed all the time now http://i.imgur.com/dr4Da6g.jpg the lines flicker and appear in random places around the screem

try the old take the GPU out, putt it back in trick. otherwise yeah afraid to say it but that is some serious artifacting meaning your GPU could be kaput. But try taking it out of the mobo completely and putting it back in first.

If anything caused it I'd be willing to bet its heat damage as I recall the 500 series ran pretty hot, over time with dust build up heat can certainly ruin a gpu.

Anyway my tips for you are above but i will add you could try cleaning all the dust out of the card, maybe change the TIM on the cooler you never know :) I've had GPU's artifact before due to the TIM basically being useless.

Check if your card is going to idle too
