Mrsyoustolemyname's laptop has died for the second time in 12 months :(

Last year it was a faulty graphics card. This year I am baffled.

On pressing the power switch, it fails to POST and goes into a loop as follows:

Power light comes
Multimedia key lights come on
CD drive makes a noise
CPU fan spins for about a second then stops and cuts out

Rinse and repeat. No post beeps are heard and nothing appears on the display.

So far I have tried the following:

Removing memory modules individually and booting with them- this didn't affect it.
Inspecting the HDD via a caddy on my desktop PC. The HDD is fine
Trying it off mains power both with and without a battery. Same as above.

Anyone else have any ideas? The laptop is now out of warranty and rather than us buying a new one a fix would be the ideal solution.

Thanks in advance for any help.

no probs good luck hope you get it sorted!

We did get it sorted, thanks to you!

Complete motherboard and RAM replacement free of charge!!! If id hadn't been for your post we would be a few hundred quid lighter for a new laptop as we had no idea it was covered under an extended warranty.

Many many many thanks. This just goes to show what a great and valuable forum we have here :)
