Dead iPhone?

Hey,

I have an iPhone 7 which I never felt the need to upgrade, everything was fine, battery still at ~87% original capacity. Last night I put it on charge and this morning it just seems completely dead (black screen).

Tried multiple chargers, connecting to PC, hard reset, dfu mode, but there's no response out of it at all.

I'm going to replace the battery but tbh I doubt it's actually the battery at fault here, going from 87% capacity to not even being able to show the charging logo seems unlikely to me. Anyone had their iphone suddenly die like this? Any ideas which part likely failed?

Yes. I trucked all the way to an Apple store when it happened to mine because it was still in warranty.

The guy did some fancy button combination (I can’t remember what) and it spring back to life.

Do you know if it was just the normal hard reset button combination (vol up, release, vol down, release, hold power) or something more fancy than that?

I honestly don't remember. I also don't remember if he had it plugged into power as well. It was very quick though.

Once it started, it was showing a very low battery percentage, despite having been on charge for hours. It was as though the phone had forgotten it was being charged. After it had been reset and charged, it was perfectly good, no further issues.

This happened to mine as well a few years back so can’t remember exactly what happened but the girl took it to the back of the store and came back 5 minutes later with a refurbished phone and said all my data will be deleted and asked if I had a back up.

Just restore from iCloud ?

As expected the battery replacement didn't work, tried every kind of recovery I could see online without luck so I guess it's dead enough to not warrant repairing :p. Looking around it seems to be quite a common issue with the iPhone 7 of the logic board just dying
