Dead mobo?

My dad recently bought a PC second hand and has had nothing but trouble with it. First of all the onboard sound refused to work no matter what I tried. After getting it diagnosed for a second opinion it turned out the audio bus on the mobo was dead. Bought a sound card and problem was solved.

After complaining how slow it seemed to be, he bought a new hard drive and ssd which I installed yesterday. However after that the pc refused to power on. CPU fan would spin for a second and then stop. Today I removed the ssd and cpu fan, case fans, hard drive, and gpu spin but nothing else happens. No post no nothing. If I remove the ram there is no beep codes. The mobo lights sometimes work and sometimes don't.

Any ideas? With the problem with the onboard sound and now this I'm thinking mobo is dead but open to suggestions for things to try.

Have you checked to make sure that all your power cables are connected correctly? If so, do you have another PSU you can try?

I would have also suggested checking that you've not shorted the board with a dropped screw or something, but that doesn't necessarily sound like its the case. Might be worth checking if nothing else works.

The 6 pin for cpu and 24 pin are connected. The only one I've removed so far is the 6 pin one to get the gpu out but I have since connected it.

Only other psu I have is the one on my own computer. Really not wanting to take mine apart but might not have much choice as I'm struggling for a solution.

Does the PC also have integrated graphics? If so you could remove the discrete GPU and try running with that.

Failing everything else, just remove everything right down to the bare minimum - board, psu, hdd/ssd and memory (try one stick at a time if nothing else works) and see if that helps. Definitely check for a short somewhere though.

No integrated graphics. Will try taking everything out bar the bare minimum to see if I can find culprit. Will have a look to see if anything is touching mobo that I've missed.

Tried bare minimum and computer still won't post. Mobo still won't beep when there is no ram installed either.

Couldn't see a short anywhere.
