Dead Motherboard, PSU or just failing POST

Hi all
I have been given an intel desktop board d975xbx, however I have no graphics for it, I.e no graphics card, however when I turn it on the fan spins, the led iluminates but the system shuts down within a second, the motherboard has an 8 pin slot for power but I just plugged the 4 pin one halfway, I the PC a write off? Or should I buy a graphics card and go from there

it might need a graphics card installed for it to post correctly

it has no onboard graphics either?

Yeah no intergrated, I feel it is shutting down a bit too quickly

look at the back of the pc for any monitor ports

vga for example if it doesn't have any then you need to try a graphic card in it,if it does,then connect the monitor to it

could also clear the cmos by leaving out the motherboard battery for 30 minutes then put back in and try

EDIT: could be because no graphic card though,best to try n borrow one for testing it with
