Dead Network Port on Mobo?

Suddenly the PC in my bedroom can no longer connect to my ADSL router. I know the router is OK as it works fine with the PC in the spare room that is connected to it. I've tried swapping the ports that both PCs are plugged into and it makes no difference. I've also tried a new patch lead and it still doesn't work. If I try to ping the router I get Destination unreachable 100% Loss.

Is there a possiblity the RJ45 socket on the mobo is knackered?

The activity LED by the RJ45 socket flickers occasionally and according to Network Connections in XP there is LAN connected.

Could it be a software issue? Driver? Firewall? XP?

Any suggestions?
