My sister has asked me to look at her pc due to "the loud whirring noise" that emanates from it. On inspection, the cpu fan had fallen off and the front tower usb wires had come away from the mobo. The pc had been working but she stopped using it due to the noise. I have simply reconnected the cpu fan but left the usb wire due to not knowing which part it attached to.The pc turns on ok and everything is quiet, but nothing appears on the monitor, no bsd etc.I cant see that there is anything else disconnected, any thoughts? I can hear the hdd spinning away and the re-attached fan spins merrily. The mobo is a msi k9vgm, not sure about the cpu except its an athlon x2, the gfx is an ati, but no idea what spec, any thoughts on what the problem may be?

apparently the pc was turned off asap when it started making the noise, but thats coming from my 14 yr old nephew, so he may have left it on a while ignoring it. I did ask if it was left on for a while, thinking that it ruined the cpu. I think that the noise that was described to me was the result of the fan hitting the hdd ribbon/cable.

Don't see how the fan can "fall off"...As they're kinda thoroughly clipped down :p

Sound's like it's been nudged/dropped or something...

You could try re-seating the CPU and RAM, see if that helps, or try and turn the system on without the RAM installed to see if you get a post error beep (consisting of long beeps normally, as there is no ram installed...)

Most new cpu's now tend to turn off before they get 'too hot', so it shouldn't have got damaged due to that factor.

I have just spoken with my nephew.he says that the computer started freezing and then crashed, he waited a while and tried again and thats when the pc started making a noise. He left it for a day and tried the pc again, but nothing came on the screen. I think that the pc had recently been moved from upstairs, so if the fan was not correctly attached initially that may have loosened it?i will try re-seating the cpu and ram. thanks for the replies:)
