Hi there

Last week one of my PC's refused to boot up - all I'm getting is a black screen with the following message:

"Reboot and select the proper boot device or insert boot media in the selected boot device and press a key"

Now with my recent purchases from OcUK i've recently upgraded the RAM and it was working fine, dont think myself this would cause these symptoms though I admit I'm no expert in this field - could it be the mother board?

This morning my new hard drive arrived which i've now replaced but I'm still getting the same message - can anyone offer any advice on my next step please?

Might be obvious but have you tried switching the cable for another, switching the SATA port the drive is connected to or the boot order in bios?

Thanks for the speedy response

I've tried changing the boot order in bios but still no joy - cant access safe mode - also tried switching the cable around (IE both ends, if that makes sense) unfortunately I dont have a spare cable to tryin order to eliminate this as the potential cause :(

I'll try changing the port the drive is connected to next and see if that makes any difference, I'll let you know how i get on.

I had a similar message a while ago but I could boot off a CD so it's probably not the same problem. In case it is try interupting the boot process to manually select the boot drive (F8 on my PC), for me this meant everything worked as it was an issue with the MBS and Bios. Had to remove the battery from the bios and wipe it to fix.

If changing the port doesn't make any difference and you want to eliminate the cable then let me know and I'm pretty sure I've got a spare that I could either send you or pass on directly depending on how far away from Dundee you are.

Duff SATA controller? What motherboard is it?

Could be the Sata controller - its an Asus PTGD1-LA motherboard (Grouper-GL8E). It's an old system I know but I've been slowly upgrading it bit by bit.

Thanks for the info there - F8 on start up does nothing at all. F10 wont allow a system recovery. Esc takes me to the setup menu though which is where I'm going to try rebooting via disc since making these changes.

Thanks very much for the kind offer there - I'm going to attempt another boot via disc since i've now changed the port and the hdd and I'll let you know the outcome.

All sorted - changed the port the Sata cable was connected to after replacing the hdd and rebooted from disc. Reinstalled windows and I'm now posting from my fixed system :)
