MyPC, (Spec in sig) has packed in I went to turn it on tonight but nothing. The main board normally shows some lights even when the PC has been shut down, but this time there is nothing.

I can hear a high pitched whistle coming from the PC, I think this is from the PSU as I can still hear this noise after I've disconnected it from the mainboard.

Any suggestions on how I can test the PSU or other components before I begin purchasing new parts?

Thanks in advance

edit/ I've tried shorting the green and black pins on the PSU, but to no avail, does this method work on the Hiper PSU?

The PSU is certainly dead then.Make sure you have a fan or something small drawing power from it when you short the green/black pins.If it still won't power up,time to break out the credit card :D

Thanks for the reply, I tried it without and with a hard drive attached, so there should be some draw.

If all it is is the PSU then thats not too bad, just hope I'm doing the test right

no friends closeby u can test to confirm if its just the PSU....

these things have a habit of taking other bits when they die such as Hdd, mobo etc etc (fingers crossed not for you or anyone ever )

unforunatley all my friends buy high street pcs and dont want to void their warranties :(

The PC was fine last night turned off as normal, came to it today and I could see no small LEDs lite through the case window before trying to turn it on. I think I knew at that point it was dead. So taking this into account I'm hoping that rather than being a catostrophic blow out its more of a small phut, and not taken anything else with it....fingers crossed!

not like u breaking any seals or anything is it? but yeh some ppl can be funny like that...

definately psu prob tho, just shame u cudnt put in a temp replacement to check all else is OK before ordering anything to save delivery charges etc

Yeh, know what you mean, but I cant force anyone although It did pass my mind :D

I will pick up a PSU tomorrow, I think I'll go for the same model again as this one was good.... until it died.

I have read a lot of reports of the Hiper 580W psu's going for no reason.

Why not try and claim on warranty ?

I have owned mine for over a year now and it has been rock solid so fingers crossed ;)

Normally I would claim, but it was bought second hand of the MM and I cant find the receipt anywhere :(

Still, I have found a Dell PC which has a 20 pin power connector from the PSU, OK not a 24 pin but if I try it with this and the main board powers up I think I should be good to go and pick up a replacement PSU.

WARNING!
Some older Dell PSUs were wired differently to standard ATX PSUs, and could damage your mobo or other components!

Nuts, there goes that plan. Trust Dell! - Thanks for the heads up

Any simple way to tell if the wiring is diff? I take it the wire colours should be good indication, or is it just not worth the risk?

I wouldn't take the chance, just google for 'Dell PSU' and you'll find more info about it.

I just found this article as an example:

An even bigger crime than simply using non-standard power connectors is that only the pinout is non-standard, the connectors look like and are keyed the same as is dictated by true ATX. There is nothing to prevent you from plugging the Dell non-standard power supply into a new industry standard ATX motherboard you installed in your Dell case as an upgrade, or even plugging a new upgraded industry standard ATX power supply into your existing Dell motherboard. But mixing either a new ATX board with the Dell supply or a new ATX supply with the existing Dell board is a recipe for silicon toast. How do you like your fried chips, medium or well done?

 OK, scrap that idea then. I'll pick up another Hiper 580W on the way home. Even though this one failed I do like the modular cabling they have.

Thanks again for the usefull advice, hopefully that will save me from any further damage!

Picked up an OCZ 520W Modstream last night and got the system up and running again with no further problems.

Thanks for the advice guys!

I found the receipt for the Hiper PSU as well, 13 months old :(
