My PX suddenly turned off and restarted (no blue screen or anything) and came up with a message during post saying 'power supply surge detected during previous power on. Asus anti-surge was triggered to prevent damage'. My motherboard is a ASUS sabretooth z87.

My power supply is an ocz ZT series 650watt. It is nearly 2yr old. It was powering a 4770k @ 4.4GHz with modest volt increases, a h100i, a 390x stock, 2x 4GB, one ssd and 4 fans. The shutdown happened the first time when browsing on Chrome. It happens after about a minute now.

I've reset bios.
Ive triend a Different cable and socket.

Does it happen without doing anything?

Try removing all usb peripherals including your KB, mouse as could be caused by a faulty usb port and observe as you say it happens in about a minute.

Thanks for the tip. I tried all that but I stgill had the problem. I then took out my GPU and it worked fine and when I reinstalled my GPU it wouldn't get past posting- I'd just get a flashing underscore instead of the Windows logo like when it is looking for bootable drives. If i went into the bios, the display would be corrupted as if my GPU was dying. I've tried both my 390x and 7970, both which require a lot of power through an 8 + 6 pin, and it happened to both. When I tried it with my 8800GT, 6 pin only, it was fine (with both cables, weirdly).

Sounds like a borked PSU. If you know the 390X and 7970 both work in other systems, it sound like the PSU isn't able to support the GPU. Bear in mind the 8800GT probably draws less power than the 390X and 7970.
