Can someone clarify if the 'Off the Record' version is a brand new standalone game?

Ive read a bit but it dosent say explicitly whether I get DR2 with the OTR version... or if I need to play DR2 first then OTR etc

If they are seperate, which is the better to play? Feel like some Zombie slashing :)

Off the record is the same game but with added features and various improvements I think & you play as frank west the photographer instead of the blonde dude

DR2:OTR has extra features, I wont say improvements because I don't think they are. It will autosave when you enter a new area, which removes a lot of the risk, tension and consequence. There is a sandbox mode for all those people that didn't understand that DR2 was already in "sandbox mode" and that you could ignore timers and cases as much or little as you liked. Sandboxing and dying a lot is part of the DR experience, sandboxing, practice and die your way to a perfect or close to run of the game.

You get an extra area with OTR and Frank is back along with the photography. It's essentially the same game with a few twists on the plot and obvious change of lead character, but most of the game remains the same.

They are both standalone.

EDIT: As far as which to play first. Whichever one you can get the cheapest. There's no proper timeline involved, it's Chuck vs Frank at the end of the day. Frank the anti-hero, bit of a scumbag paparazzi that's fallen from grace or Chuck former motorsport star that is a generally standup guy out to save his daughter and clear his name.

I pitch a tent thinking about Dead Rising games. In my humble opinion, Dead Rising is one the best games of this generation, DR2 having slightly less personal impact, just by it's nature as a sequel. They definitely done a lot with DR2, though. The weapon combos, the bosses, graphics and barring personal taste in protagonist, it's a bit more of everything. How a sequel should be done.

Things to keep in mind. Dying is part of the game, you start from the beginning, but you keep all your character progress and obviously everything you learned while exploring, sandboxing, attempting missions, so you set off again with the aim to go a bit further and be a bit more effective. Getting from the start to a good ending on your first life would be extraordinarily difficult, I would imagine it's been done, you can't underestimate how masochistic and/or resourceful the gaming community is, but it's certainly not the intended use.

Go on a zombie killing and scavenging field day and chip away at the bigger picture and don't think dying is the end of the world.

I have DR2 on my list of things to do, is it timed again? I hate being on a deadline to do stuff, I like to take my time. I remember the first game had a set amount of days which I hated.

The only thing I don't like is the fact there is no way to truly 'scavenge'. As in you cannot take items somewhere and store them iirc, which would greatly increase the fun factor of the sandbox imo.

Dead Rising 2 OTR isn't canon, Dead Rising 2 is.

Ignore the time limits. Fail a case, fail to save your daughter, you should be dying and starting again anyway. Failure is part of the game. Do whatever you please, as long as you are making character progress and learning, dying and passing a deadline shouldn't matter.

I was a bit miffed that they upped the save slots from 1 to 3 in DR2, it's supposed to be hard and have consequences, not just rewind 20 minutes and have a redo. So I certainly think being able to hoard items would make it too easy and take away some of the fun. The items are always in the same place, you just have to get to them alive.

I wish I had said something as simple and to the point as "DR2:OTR isn't canon". At least you had the good sense to.

DR2OTR is approx 45% new game & a lot of fun.

DR2 is also a great game. Both games have a lot to do & plenty of co-op action if you like 1 you will like the other game. Zombie sandboxes with timed missions & plenty of crazy weapons combos to kill the zombies with (100's of ways the most object interaction in any game I have ever played).

Look around online for the retail versions DR2 is under £8 & DR2OTR a little more once installed neither need the DVD in the drive either only for reinstalls in the future but they both use GFWL + SSA as their only DRM which means unlimited activations so you can copy/paste backup the install folders just use the same gamertag to play with. Most simple DRM ever (apart from DRM free).

DO NOT BUY EITHER GAME USED THEY MUST BE NEW SEALED COPIES AS WELL!
