Dead SATA controller?

Hi,

I've got a new build, which has a really odd problem.

The specs are a Intel i3 6100, Gigabyte B150 Sniper B7, Corsair Vengeance LPX 8GB, a b-grade R9 290X, an old Corsair CX600 and a old OCZ Vertex 2 120GB.

The problem is that the system POSTS etc just fine, and can get into the Windows installer but then either the installer hangs on 'copying windows files' or will finish installing only to fail at the 'setting up devices' stage or lastly will complete the install and get to the desktop only for the system to hang there.

Multiple installs and using different flash drives for the installer have the same (inconsistent) result.

I have tested the SSD in an old computer and it seems fine, CrystalDiskInfo reports 100% health and CrystalDiskMark runs without issue, only the speeds are significantly slower than the drives benchmarks were when it was new.

Which leaves either the motherboard isn't really compatible with the older SSD or the SATA controller is dead/dying?

The board only has chipset SATA ports.

Any other ideas would be appreciated :)

It would be very unusual for sata ports to go, more likely to be the cable or SSD. As it's not crashing and just hanging then it does seem to be an i/o issue, not board/psu etc. Might be worth testing with an old HDD if you have any.
