I bought this yesterday on direct download following the post of another forum member. I really don't like the 3rd person perspective. Is there any way to make it 1st person?

The game is designed with that awkward 3rd person perspective so that you cannot see what is approaching from behind you, also makes you panic a little more when in trouble :)

It's supposed to feel claustrophobic. It was also designed to have no UI as such, which is why all your gauges and stuff are integrated into the suit.

Worked brilliantly in my opinion but if you play it expecting it to be a fps then you'll never be happy.

Tips for a better experience:

Nvidia gfx, turn off in game v-sync and force it via the nvidia control panel.
Crank the mouse sensitivity up.
Play with the lights off when dark and the volume cranked right up :D

The character handles like a wet sponge in treacle. If theres two enemies coming either side of you, you're screwed - theres no way to avoid damage.

I don't get the 'it's in 3rd person so you CANNOT see what's behind you' comment though.

You can see what's behind you to some extent when it's in 3rd person, whereas in 1st person you would only see what's in front of you.

you need to put in the time if you judge it on a hrs play youll be left dissapointed.

once you get used to the controls and style of play its a very good game.

I'll have another go tonight, but it's not the way I like to play. If it must be 3rd person I'd prefer the character to be in the center of the screen, with the cramera zoomed out so I can see what's going on.

Give it a chance, i found it to be a brilliant game and i could see myself finishing it again sometime:)

Wouldn't really work for the environment the game is set in though, it's usually quite tight corridors and such so a zoomed out camera would feel odd. It can be a bit awkward at times, but that adds to the tension and atmosphere really.

In most 3rd person games, Resi for example you can see quite clearly behind you, but in dead space it is pretty much impossible to see what is coming from behind.

Yes obviously in 1st person you cannot see what is behind you but the controls would be way more responsive and lack the tension created by dead space in 3rd person. As someone else has mentioned there is no real visible UI and the movement often feels clunky like it should with a suit like that on the character.

I think my total playtime was 16 hours or so. Does get slightly repetitive at times, but the tension and atmosphere stop that from becoming a major issue, and I quite liked how the storyline progressed too.

No idea why you aimed that at my post, I never said it.

I completed this game about an hour ago, and i must say i loved it.

3rd person view, and mouse wobbles took some getting used to, but the heavy slow style of control helped to create that desperate feeling of helplesness.

You always felt that if there were to many enemies you were a dead man.

Headphones and darkness are the best way to play, even tho on more than one occasion, i had to remove my phones and turn on speakers, as i was starting to sweat a little, and i kept seeing shadows out of the corner of my eyes.
