Dead sub?

I've got a Tannoy TFX 5.1 setup powered by a Denon avr x2000.

I couple of weeks ago I noticed the sub started making an intermittent humming/buzzing. Not too loud, but audible enough to be annoying. The sub was working ok between these occasional noises. I got home today and the sub has stopped working completely.

The problem I have is that I don't know whether its the sub that's broken or the sub out on the amp. I've swapped the cable and it's still the same. The only other speakers I have in the house are some ancient Creative Labs I-Trigue 3400 2.1, so I tried plugging the sub into one of the outputs on that and there was no response in the sub. Not sure if that's because the sub is dead, or just because a sub wouldn't work when being sent audio that's a higher frequency than what it's designed for. Would this have worked if the sub wasn't dead?

I bought them both from Richer sounds and I think I'm within the 5 year warranty period, but I can't find the receipt (physical or email) so I think I'm out of luck :(

Replace the calbe
Connect the sub out from the AVR into another sub, if it works then it's the Tannoy sub at fault
Connect the sub into another AVR, if it works then you know it's the AVR.

I've had two faulty humming subs , both out of warranty, £50 to repair each one , the trick is when you have finished using it , turn it off at the mains , don't just leave it on standby
