oh I do like to be beside the seaside
Is anyone watching the current series of Deadliest Catch on Discovery?

Was really shocked when Phil caught Jake stealing his pain pills.
I can't imagine how he feels, especially after he'd prev said that Jake was the one who he thought would take over the boat.

You are right, Phils discovery of jakes addiction to painkillers, is quite harrowing to watch, he is understandably shocked at the betrayal by his son.

On a more current note though, I am a little worried by recent events, that have Sig, Jonathon & Andy having quit the show due to the lawsuit that Discovery have filed against the Hillstrand brothers for a breach of contract problem. With the Cornelia Marie unlikely to be fishing King Crab this year (she's not registered for the season as of yesterday), it looks as though there may not be a seventh season.

Next week's episode will be hard to watch, evening knowing what's going to happen.
Seeing the sons and the others reaction is going to be emotional.

Sig, the Hillstrands and Phil are the back bone of the show, if they all leave then it won't be the same show.

Yep. Not looking forward to it, one to watch when the gf is out so if the i get moisture in my eye she wont see! :D

Cant believe the news about the rest leaving, was pretty shocked when they dropped the Maverick and Blake as he seemed to fit in well with the show. Reading here it seems that the north western may be back, it also mentions Jake and Josh are going to be back for the next season.

As far as I know, Jake and Josh signed contracts with Discovery a while back, however a quick look at the Westward Region Commercial Fisheries pre-season registration, does not show the Cornelia Marie as a registered vessel for this years King Crab season, which starts in just over two weeks, that said, Derreck Ray does hold his own registration, so it is possible that it will be done that way, I don't know.

As I understood it, the agreement was that Sig & Jonathon, had agree'd to mentor the boys, until such a time as they were able to run the CM themselves. However, they wouldn't be able to do this and have Discovery filming them, under the current 'problems'.

A lot of people are judging Discovery to be the bad guys in their sueing the Hillstrand brothers, but, without knowing the full facts, it is hard to tell. From what I understand of it, Discovery will likely win, and that could well be the death nail in what is a great story.

I probably won't watch if Sig isn't on it. If Sig and Jonathon aren't on then forget it.

Sad to see the mighty dollar being swung once again - at least they won't lose their day jobs!!

The dispute between sig, the hilstrands and discovery, isn't a matter of 'the mighty dollar', but is a contractual dispute arising from the fact that the Hilstrands signed a contract with discovery, to produce a spin-off show called 'Hilstranded', which they filmed, but subsequently refused to take part in post-production interviews/voiceovers, that was part of their contract. Effectively, they wasted discovery's time, the time of the camera crews, production and planning time, and as such, have been sued for that cost, which is entirely within the rights of Discovery to do.

You can be damn sure that if it were the other way around, the Hilstrands would have been the ones sueing Discovery.

As for Sig, well, I think there is more to it than the 'show of solidarity', as I am pretty certain that the Hansens and the Hilstrands, have the same legal representation.

Yes, I'm not happy two see this situation, I'd like to see it resolved in the next 10 days (before the start of King Crab Season), but at the same time, it gives some space for new boats, which is sorely needed, and allows for more focus on the remaining boats, especially the Cornelia Marie, which will only be fishing for King Crab this year, as she is due for major refit work during Opilio season.

And who knows, by the time it comes for opies, maybe everything will be sorted out.

I loved this show, but am now wondering what direction it will take, and if it can actually survive past this. The contractural things is a mess, i'm sure there is stuff that hasnt been leaked out to the media yet, it may with time i guess

As far as I know, they have three confirmed boats for this season, down from 5, they regularly have one boat on rotation, so having two shouldn't be so much of a problem.

What this does allow for, is a greater focus on the CM and the Harris boys, their struggles to keep the CM in business and the learning process that they need to go through in order to become captains in their own right and continue the legacy that their father left them with.

While I have loved watching the unfolding lives of the crews of the existing boats, I do believe that in the last couple of years, the existing crews have somewhat rested upon their laurels, the larking about of the hilstrands, the way they have spoken about members of their crew (how quickly people forget Andy's comments about how certain crew members should be taken out and put down like an old dog). And Sig, I had a lot of respect for him at first, but over the years, he's become so much more arrogant, to the point last year, while admitting that he was pushing edgar too hard, he then turned and blamed edgar for all the problems and made out that if Edgar took time away from crabbing, he would be disrespecting his father.

Perhaps it is time to look for new blood...

Love this series, sounds like Tony Lara is now captain instead of Derek.

I have to admit I hadn't really thought much of Derek until the whole police issue, thought he handled it badly but totally agree with what he did, have to respect him for that.

From what I know, Tony Lara took over for Opilio Season, with mostly a new crew. His big advantage is that Tony grew up alongside Phil on the crab boats, he has a LONG history with the Cornelia Marie, and I believe he was responsible for giving Josh his first job Salmon tendering, at the age of 15.

I believe that he has the advantage over Derrick, in that he already has the respect of the crew, and the way that the Cornelia Marie works.

Will it be enough though? I don't know.. time will tell..

Just watched it myself. You could tell that Jake was guilty by the way he went off when accused at the table and when Derek pulled out the bag, too many denials. They way he just skipped off the boat before it even docked just onfirmed it.

Shame really as i really liked the Cornelia Marie, though i really think Josh was always treated as 2nd best by his dad but to me he has far more potential than Jake.

Kefkef - I think Phil mentioned once that he saw himself in Jake and for that reason I think it came over that he favoured him more. Maybe he did and at the expense of Josh.

Just seen the eposide after the early end to blue crab - no spoilers but certainly interesting times!

While I am not a fan of reality type shows both the missus and I love Deadliest Catch. Been watching it since day one and so far this season is turning out to be good. The Jake and Josh situation is a little annoying as both the lads have got to grow up and accept change. Yes they have a large share in the boat and yes they were used to it being run in a certain way but i think that they had it a little easy when their dad was the boss but what they have to realise is that they hired someone to be Captain and a Captain will run his boat his way and he is responsible for the boat and all lives on board. Jake is a fool and by agreeing to a test and then doing a runner he made himself look like what he is....an addict. I do hope that he does sort himself though as hate to see anyone screwed up with drugs.

One thing so far in this season though is that there doesnt seem to be much footage from the Time Bandit and those crazy nuts are my favorites. Going to watch the next episode tonight with the start of the opies.

It's not because they were his kids, it was just the way Phil was, and how he ran things, he got aggressive only when he needed to, and left it at that. Jake from the Northwestern agreed that it was a good boat to work on due to the friendly atmosphere.

Josh wants to keep it that way.

Thing is when you get a new boss you gotta accept some sort of change. They took a dislike to the new Captain immediately and the fact that Jake was still using - you can see the difference in the next latest episode at the start of the new season.
