Death of the arcade?

Sadly consoles caught up and they have been dead for years, have good memories playing R-Type, Double Dragon, Golden Axe, Outrun, Afterburner, Space Harrier, Gauntlet and ChaseHQ

The arcade in Asia is still alive and kicking, some great games e.g. tekken 6. I think part of the problem here is the local councils here associate arcades with crime.

There is a bowling alley near my that has quite a few House of the Dead (2 and 3), Time Crisis (2, 3 and maybe 4 not sure) and racing machines in it. It has 2 versions of DDR, the new Mario Kart booth, a couple more shooting ones (including a hunting game) and some random others.

The company I work for supplies a lot of the bowling alleys. The problem nowerdays is the large cost of buying new games, they ain't cheap, most sites have a budget for the year and could end up blowing the whole lot on one new machine that ends up not making a lot of money. Plus the fact they isn't a whole lot out there that is different.

It is a shame about the death of the old arcade classics and the 10p/20p a go machines. I used to spend hours playing through a load of classics!

I remember when I used to be able to finish Aliens on one credit! Ahh good times!

Mate of mine has got an arcade cabinet in his garage... still hours of fun playing Street Fighter Alpha and Marvel Super Heroes. Sometimes there's even several of us having to take turns on it, winner stays on rules :)

Consoles have surpassed arcade machines as of about 5 years ago to be honest, no one is willing to pay £1 a go on Sega Rally unless they just happen to be out at the same time (e.g. bowling with arcade machines nearby, etc). Shame, but that's progress for you.

I live in lowestoft, why on earth would you go to yarmouth? its the worlds biggest hole and needs nuking.

Hehe, the age old Yarmouth/Lowestoft feud! Where abouts in lowestoft do you live? I live in lowestoft too btw, near carlton colville! :D

The last time i went to the arcade was when me and 2 mates played sega rally i think... must have been a good 10 years ago. dont really feel like im missing much by not going though.

I miss the 90s arcades days :)

I used to love Sega Rally and Daytona USA. I remember when I went to the US when Daytona USA 2 had just been released.

The last time I played on the arcade was to give 'Ford Racing #' **forget what number it was and being amazing how rubbish it was. I may as well be driving a wet sponge on the track. No feedback on the steering wheel as well.

The arcades died when the PS1 was released, waaaaaaaaaaaaaay back in 1995, in fact some might say that they were on their arse when the SNES was at its peak.

It was a shame how Daytona USA got ported to the Dreamcast. Quirky controls let the game down big time :(

I thought that Sega Rally 2 in 1998 was a great Arcade game. One of the last greats from Sega :(

I went to the Trocodero in London a few years ago...House of the Dead 3 (with shotguns) and F-Zero AX (deluxe cabinet - it moves around!)

Would like them in my house :(

I know you can get House of the Dead 2 + 3 on Wii but its not the same without the shotguns. We were reloading them one handed Sarah Connor stylee :D

Anyone remember the Arcade games that charged you 50p for half a credit? Could there have been anything more pointless...why would I put 50p in the machine for half a go and not put the other 50p in? :D

The rot set in when games started charging you cash to buy in-game items. I think I nearly passed out when I played Double Dragon 3 in the arcade and had to feed it with 10p just to buy a pair of nunchuks.....I'm not sure why I was playing that pile of poo anyway :D
