Debate on MMO Communities

Our guild is kind of similar to how you are describing yours. Except normally by the time we get worse for wear they had long gone to bed.

My thread was more about the point of, do you think it is ok letting kids and adults mix online especially in today's culture? If you had kids that kind of thing.

While there are dangers on the internet as long as you teach your kids correctly they cannot get hurt in any way like they could if you let them go play outside.

I think it's a good thing that different ages mingle on the net when it works out. I'm friends with a guy over in the US whose nearly 20years my senior and I've known him for about 10 years. He has a wife and kids and I speak to them all regularly aswell as play CoD2/4 and SC2.

It really depends.

The atmosphere can vary wildly between different groups of players.

I don't think it's automatically a problem or weird/wrong.

Some groups of players have had a mix of ages without it being an issue (you typically get more younger gamers in FPS-land for example). Not everyone in EVE is like we are. Some groups have PG language at all times policies (Tuskers Public for example) and many younger players.

Some of the groups I have played with it would be very inappropriate (I'd feel weird about my hypothetical kids hanging out with my EVE corp), others not really (but not so much my Planetside outfits).

I couldn't really comment on your group without hanging out on comms or whatever.

Did you find yourself complaining about the young people in your guild and then only to realize that you were not so long a go that young guy yourself?

I don't see any problem with it and that is the only way young people learn the way of the world. Just need to make sure they have respect for their elders and all that. But I am not the type to have friends much younger than me. Some people don't mind it, I can be a bit rude to young people.

Maybe you just reach a point where you need to move on and find more mature group?

I was far from the most mature person especially when I was younger. What you said does have a lot of truth to it.

I avoided guilds with children, not from some supposed moral or 'acceptability' standpoint, but because:

1 - They sucked
2 - They were annoying
3 - Unreliable

hahaha :p

I play games like arma2 and Eve in mature groups with 18+ age limits. Though we do keep out chat PG13 most of the time due to some players having small children who sit and watch their dad playing games :D

I'v played in guilds in other mmos like GW and runescape with younger members. In those cases The older players tend to naturally gravitate together and for the most part avoid the younger guys. They're just annoying ;)
