got a fresh debain install and zsnes on working but with no sound.

I assume you have sound in other programs? What are the settings under the zsnes config? Anything that you can fiddle with?

yes other sound works, default zsnes settings

Try running:
zsnes -ad sdl
In a terminal and see if sound works. Apparently there *has* been a sound bug in the past but should have been fixed by now depending on when the last package was last updated.
