Should be a quickie.

I have just CD1 of the Debian 5.0.7 Distro and I threw it on last night for a quick play, but the installer app in Gnome doesnt seem to be there, and I dont know where to download it from either.

During the install, I had the LAN disabled, and while its on teh net now, its not doing any form of updating and so I seem to be unable to get that started either.

Im on it right now but as things are, its kind of a dummy setup with only basic use.

ADDITIONAL

Im working on the dpkg info and this is new to me, but at least tell me if Iam on the right path?

Thanks.

^That'll update the image currently in ram from the livecd. It'll work, but probably not do anything terribly helpful.

The easy answer is to reboot and choose installation rather than the try-before-you-buy option. The answer I think you're looking for is that it's called ubiquity. apt-get install ubiquity doesn't find it on my debian install, but then my install is knackered so this may not mean much.

p.s. My bad, ubiquity is an ubuntu-only effort. apt-get "debian-installer" is probably what you're after. Rebooting will be easier, and probably more reliable though.

Can you get on the net? Pinging google OK?

What does apt-get update and apt-get upgrade do?

Oh yes it was on the net just fine... I posted the question while on it.

apt-get upgrade / update were doing no updates, although they did seem to go onto the update site and verify themselves and there was 5 files ( I forget the names ) but they all returned 0 as they were already up to date.

I was fully installed. There is no live option with this Debian CD ( or the previous DVDs I have )

apt-get debian-installer? - Ah yeah, thats probably what I needed

Im unsure as to why this was not included in teh CD but maybe it was my ISO or CD that was flawed?

Anyway, I have done a semi-cure

I have the entire 5.0.3 x64 DVD set and so I thought bugger it, Im going back to Deian full-time on that PC, so I threw the basics of that onto the HDs and a quick check sw the package manager and now its updateing to 5.0.7 as we speak.

Long way round I know but no matter... I should be done in a few hours.

Now, that said, I have also dug out an old XP System and thrown a SCSI Drive into it. Its a 74GB Drive that should be dead, but hey, its just put Debian on and lo and behold I have the same issues as I had on the other one.

So, I will try " apt-get debian-installer " and see how I go from there.

Thanks guys.
