Right so i finally got round to linux on my laptop and decided this years test would be Debian! I have 2-3 sort of big questions on it before i jump about and smile that it works propperly (then need to sit and tweak my desktop pc to get x working but thats another days task)

Anyway my first and pretty simple question is how do you do WPA wireless networking? (this i think i know what to do but im putting it in for just now).

Secondly (and probably most importantly) how do you get 3d acceleration for x with debian (yeah i know im ignoring the no proprietory stuff potentially but i want to use the graphics card). I have an ait 2400 in my laptop and dont think the best thing to do is use the amd installer (as it was a bit messy last time).

Finally, does anyone have KDE 4.1? Its the first time KDE has actually appealed to me (used to be massivly into xfce around the time of xfce4 coming out, and been a gone fan from it actually working in gentoo) but i want to know how to well make it look good (poor explanation). My main problem is that the menus come out as grey bars separate to the nice well designed wraps.

Debian is a very stable distribution, but lacks some of the more modern features you'll see in Fedora for example, or Ubuntu.

I've tried the latest version, 5.0, during the last few weeks and it's not bad. If you really want to try it then I'd install it with either Gnome or XFCE because the KDE it ships with is version 3.6 or similar.

The wifi connectivity and X should work perfectly straight out of the box without further tweaking.

Version 4.1 of KDE is dire, steer clear. Version 4.2 is, apparently, a massive improvement. Personally, I'd wait until the next release of Kubuntu (Ubuntu with KDE as the default WM) that ships with 4.2 and try that.

You won't be able to get XFCE to look 'good' in the same way that you can make Gnome or KDE look good. Remember, it's supposed to be a lightweight WM, it's about speed not looks. That said, the default XFCE theme Murrina Storm Cloud is stunning.

I also tried debian last few weeks, and it doesn't hold a candle to arch, ubuntu, mandriva, dreamlinux, pardus, opensuse etc etc It had a few niggles. Then for now apparent reason decided to implode & i couldn't even boot into it one morning. I cba fixing it, went back to Arch.

It didnt install ESD sound from the get go, was quite funny, im sure its a top notch server OS, but the desktop was a bit of a joke.
