I am no painter but I am in the process of modding a server case. I was thinking of having a "Linux Powered" logo on the left side panel and a giant "Tux" on the right side panel. I found out you can get decal "paper" for inkjet printers so I was wondering if I could print the artwork onto a decal, apply it to the case and then go over it with clear spray on varnish?

Not sure if it is safe to put a clear coat or 5 over decals as I have never done anything like this before.

So does anyone have any experience with this then?

lol, theres not a lot of options for DIY declas, unless you paint it yourself.
check out modeling wesite shops where you can buy waterslide transfers, but in my experience these only really work on light back grounds.

I found some inkjet printable waterslide transparencies which I can put into my home printer. I was just more concerned with whether or not it is safe to put a clear coat (or several) over the top of these, or would they eventually lift and damage the finish?

The area I plan to put the decals on will have a white background.

It is much easier for me to make images on my computer than it is with an airbrush, so being able to print my own decal and then put a protective coat over the top would be ideal.
