Decent alternative to isopropyl alcohol?

I'm struggling to get my hands on it round my way. I've read about people using all kinds of things, but they all seemed shady at best. Acetone, lighter fluid, even vodka. That sounds pretty grim. I'm determined to make a better job of my last build, which I sort of threw together, and temps were never right. Anyone have any ideas? Or should I just get some online and have to wait on it arriving?

You mean to clean heatsink compound off? There's a product by Akasa that I've had used for about 4 years now (not even half empty yet) that's excellent. And you won't mind inhaling toxic fumes as it comes in a nice lemony twist!

Ok not sure where the lemon flavoured one has gone - but this might be it's younger brother.

That's exactly what it's for. I really should have mentioned that. A toot of toxic citrus while I'm on the job, eh? Doesn't sound bad at all.

Try asking for old tights, MAKE SURE you stress it's for fan filters and show them the finished article ;)

Make a point of displaying them a la Price is Right.. while wearing nothing but her old tights. You could get really creative and cut the bits for fan filters out of interesting places.

I was reading through the AS5 guide and I'm all paranoid now. It even gave a measurement for how thick a fingerprint can be.. not all that thick, mind you, but the seed is planted. It said that I shouldn't use a citrus based cleaner, but then we have the funky lemon stuff that Akasa have made specifically for the job. Neurosis ahoy.

Let's say I use isopropyl alcohol, and a lens cleaner/coffee filter to clean up the surfaces, what "plastic tool" have you guys used to remove the stock thermal paste from heatsinks?

Here's a link to the Artic Silver Guide. I'm sure it's old news to most, but I referenced it here.

here you go, there might be a store near you, there is a large store not far from me.

Cheers. I managed to work out where that link was going, and there is one sort of close. It'll certainly be quicker than ordering online. It's just getting to it. I live in the middle of nowhere. Maybe an idea to edit out that link before the powers that be come for you in the night.

As for scraping off the old stuff then an old credit card cut into a strip is good, this is also good for appling new compound. By credit card I mean any plastic card, I've never actually used a credit card for this, it's normally some old gift card or store card but you get the idea.
