I'm currently running my old 2500 barton@2ghz and it's soon time for a nice upgrade, i've been looking at the am2 dual cores.

What chip is getting the best overclocking results at the moment?

Although I've always been happy with AMD CPUs, the Intel Core 2 range whipes the floor in terms of overclockability, some achieving 100% overclocks. Just have a look at some of the threads here, you'll see what I mean :)

C2D's are better when overclocked than AM2's atm, but if you do want to go the AM2 route the G1 stepping 65nm ' Brisbane ' cores are the about the best for overclocking at the moment. Any X2 that has ' DDBOX ' at the end of the box code is a Brisbane core afaik

Slightly better apparently are the F3 stepping Windsor X2 cores( box code of CZBOX ), but these are hard to find in the UK.

Either of these cores, when paired with a capable motherboard / ram seem to do 3ghz fairly easily from what I've been reading.

Thanks for the information, i can start looking at prices etc.

I'm only thinking about the amd route, as it seems a lot cheaper than intel. One other thing, can you overclock both cores?

AMD is cheaper than Intel yeah...but Intel chips are SO much faster when overclocked.

And yes when overclocking it doesn't matter how many cores the chip has...it's irrelevant in terms of overclocking

That's debatable to be honest. You're only looking at a difference of around £30 between both setups afaik when comparing just the cpu / mboard / ram. :

Intel :

Asrock 4CoreDual-VSTA - around £45 - £50
Intel Core 2 Duo E4300 - around £70 - £80
Team 2GB PC6400 DDR2 - around £55

AMD :

Biostar TForce 550 - around £45 - £50
AM2 X2 3600 Brisbane - around £45 - £50
Team 2GB PC6400 DDR2 - around £55

These are 2 of the ' cheapest ' combos that I've read about that allow decent overclocks on each platform. Average clocks for ther AsRock board & cpu seem to be around 2.7ghz, whereas the average clock for the Biostar board & cpu seem to be around 2.9ghz.

Overclocking affects both cores. You can't have 1 core overclocked and the other at stock values.

Forgot to add that a better Intel board would allow the cpu to clock to around 3.2 - 3.4ghz for an extra £30-£40, whereas with the AMD setup atm no matter what the board / cpu, you're only going to get around 3.0-3.1ghz max.

Also note that even at 2.7Ghz the Core 2 will wipe out the X2 at 2.9 or 3GHz easily.

Would that still apply to the 1-2mb cache C2D's, or only the 4mb E6400 / 6600

All tbh. The difference between the 2 and 4mb versions are miniscule and the 1mb versions are no slouches either. The E6400 is 2mb btw, i think you mean the E6420
