Ok, noticed a small chip (about 2mm) that's started to rust a bit and it's annoying me so I want to sort it asap. What's a decent anti rust formula that I can go and get today? Preferably something that Halfords stock.

The best way would be to wire brush the rust completely off as with rust converting products dont always fully convert the rust under the top layer. Downside would be you'd damage the paint around the area with a wirebrush. You will need to paint over it to seal it otherwise it will rust again.

Aye, I'm planning on painting over it once done, the only reason I don't want to sand is like you said, I don't want to damage the paint around the chip which will probably happen with it being such a small area.

I use the hammerite anti rust stuff from halfords. Stuff goes along way. Its a green gunk and converts rust to a solid and turns black once it's done.

Kurust? im not a big fan of this anymore. never seems to get to all the rust and it comes back. theres another brand which has become quite popular recently with some good reviews, forgotten the name however.

In which case you are unlikely to kill all the rust, as it will have crept underneath the paint surrounding the chip by now.

Best stuff I ever came across for protecting bare metal body parts has good to be the stuff we used in the RAF. Etchprime. It's a two-part mix of a yellow base enamel and an additive - phosporic acid. Used by the airforce to protect airframes prior to repaint. It comes as a two-part mix. Mix a small amount, whop it on, and when it dries - bingo. Weatherproof for months even without primer or paint afterwards.

The RAF use it as a pre-paint anti-corrosion treatment for aluminium alloys but it's wicked for rust protection of mild steel.

Where'dya get it? Same place I got the last batch I bought. Marine chandlers... And while you're there check out the slick stainless steel nuts, bolts and washers that make exhaust maintenance a real wheeze. Sorted...

How would you sort it then if its crept under the paint?. Ive got the same issue with my Focus :(, bought some hammerite no1 rust beater spray, krust pen for stone chips etc and some waxoyl for spraying inside the doors. Amidoingitrite? :D

This is why I'm so in favour of buying galvanised cars, there are a small few chips on the Punto, all with bare metal still showing, and no damage to surrounding paintwork.

If you don't want to damage the surrounding paint and do a proper job, which is fine, then the best option is to use a rust converting product and seal it.
