Decent Cheapish Firewall?

Hi,

I've just uninstalled the travesty of free firewalls (comodo) because plain and simple it was too much hastle to use, didn't actively find any viruses and was annoying the hell out of me because it kept popping up "Do you want to allow xxx", worse than Vista..

So I've decided to get actually buy a decent firewall, since AVG has picked up about 20 viruses after 30 seconds of use I need to protect my PC as It's been casually slowing down (not by much) and Flash hasnt worked in a while.

So really what I'm asking for is a decent firewall that wont cost me so much, I'm not bothered if it's a yearly subscription as long as it doesn't cost too much (not much more than £13).

cheers

edit - I'm looking at F-Secure as I've used them in the past and they were pretty good at updating daily but I want something a bit cheaper.

If you have a system infected with 20+ viruses then you need to clean these first. Also, firewalls do not scan your system for infections - this is what anti virus software is for.

If you want anti virus recommendations check the sticky thread. If you are behind a firewall router (lots of people are these days) then simply turning Windows firewall on will be sufficient once you have a clean system and up-to-date anti virus in place.

Good luck with it. My advice would be back up and reinstall because if the machine has been infected with lots of viruses over a long period you can never quite be sure you've cleaned everything.

That's the whole point of a software firewall, it blocks individual applications access to the internet unless you explicitly tell it otherwise. You have to teach it which applications are allowed to access the internet, by ticking "remember my answer" or whatever and clicking allow.

I did that and often a few seconds later I would get another for the same application or something regarding that application, It stopped other applications from working and the UI was very bad imo.

I had a pleasant experience with F-Secure many years ago so I'll be looking at them.

I'm behind a router and windows firewall is enabled but obviously something was letting it through.

I'll do a complete reformat of my PC when I've backed everything up,

Cheers Thehayes.

Hmmm. A little bit of confusion between a firewall and an AV program methinks. As it happens, Comodo is actually quite a good firewall. Used in conjunction with Avira AV, its pretty much as good as any payware internet security suite.

I know the difference ;D (AV removes/quarantines viruses and Firewalls stop you getting infected).

I'm not faulting Comodo, but Just scanned using AVG and it's removed shedloads, I couldnt find my way through the Comodo ui and it popped up all the time, especially annoying when I'm playing an MMO and It minimises everything.

I beg to differ - that's not the difference: firewalls filter and block unwanted traffic, they don't actively protect against infection from viruses. That is the job of the AV engine.

You don't have to get pop-ups all the time in Comodo, you just drop the notifcation slider right down, then once its asked about your programs wanting access for the first time (eg Steam), and you tick dont ask me again, you wont get them anymore, you'll only get them when you install a new game say, and it needs to access the net to unlock or something, which is the point in a software firewall, to let you choose what access's the net.:p

If you have a router & windows firewall there is no real point in a software firewall I must say.

Install a better anti virus like Avira/Avast!/Nod32/Kaspersky & a decent spyware/malware tool like Malwarebytes or Spybot & you shouldn't have no problems!

agreed. why people feel the need to get fleeced by highstreet PC planet stores for firewall software is beyond me.

Firewalls stop you getting infected

wrong. decent AV stops you getting infected. firewalls restrict traffic via different ports etc, they DO NOT virus scan.

Another vote for the Windows Firewall.
Depending on which version of vista you have I think there are 2 versions of the firewall.

As said above if you use a router firewall then it will stop anything before it gets into your PC. Better than any software firewall.
