Hi there - I'm in the market for a nice plush chess set. A quick Google reveals a set of prices that must be more idiot tax than production cost / reasonable profit. I refuse to believe that a nice well presented chess set could possibly cost more than one hundred pounds! Well it clearly can, but to those with more money than sense.

Any recommendations?

I have bought from http://www.chessbaron.co.uk/ before and they certainly have a good range, although their prices are far from bargains there are a few sets on their for sensible money regardless of what you are looking for.

If you are after a staunton set in a quality material (which would be my personal preference if I were intending to actually play with it) then I would say online is your best bet, however if you are looking for a themed set with character pieces then I would definitely recommend finding a physical shop where you can see/touch the pieces.

Price wise you should be able to get something very nice for around £100, although that is pretty much the starting price for anything that could be considered a 'display' set.
