the most important thing is weighted pieces. Unweighted are awful to play with. Look for a nice wood for the board too, not just random hardwood. Mahogany, ebony, padauk, maple, acacia, that sort of stuff.
Looking at getting a decent chess set for my son for Xmas (17).
He's been into chess for a while and has a couple of sets, but was after something a bit special he would appreciate and look after.

Absolutely, it’s the workmanship and cost of materials. Fine woods aren’t cheap these days, neither is skilled labour.Blimey, chess sets go for serious money!![]()
