I've just come back from a little camping holiday and my little Corsa was completely lacking in space for the huge amount of crap my missus took with us! Coped well mind... but looking at a cheap mid-sized car to maybe swap to without much outlay if any at all on top of what I might be able to get for my car.

I guess theres the usual options of Astras, 306's, Focus's around 2k which are cheap to run and so on.... but really do like Focus's at the mo.

I don't like 5 door cars, I find them quite ugly and "old man" so it'd be a three door.

I don't know much about them... only other alternative for me would probably be a mark 4 astra (cheap to run and repair is essential and don't like bigger cars - no question) so don't know which engines to choose but a bit of poke would be useful, don't wanna go slower than my 1.6 Corsa put it that way. So probably at least the 1.8 petrol...

Can you get a good one around 2000 reg for 2k or less in good shape? Or would I be flogging a dead horse with this idea? lol

Well I like what I like Paradigm... as I'm sure you do ;)

I think I read something about... dual mass clutches letting go, but they're on 2.0 engines?

What are the big expensive bits like on the 1.8's? Gearboxes, clutches, engines etc.. any notable problems which are common?

Do Focus's have typical ford electrical problems?

Rust? Or am I safe from that? :D

It was elaboration of a point. Not an exact quote, and you knew that anyway.

As for a £2k focus, Its easily do-able, but it will mean putting up with the focus interior.

Get the 2.0 over the 1.8 also.

Yes I did, but it wasn't really your place to tell me what I should or shouldn't think/like... ;)

However, thank you for the reply :) Anyone know much about this clutch issue I read about re: 2.0's?

lol - well I have a Corsa B Sport so... :D

Looked @ mpg just for the 2.0 and it's 32 combined.. I do 90% town driving so maybe the 37mpg combined of the 1.8 may be more suitable.

I doubt the difference would be that much in real life, then there is the fact that the running costs of the 2.0 will be the same as the 1.8, but you gain more power and torque?

I'd certainly not bother with the 1.8.

Wouldn't say it would be noticeably different tbh. For a couple of pence you save on fuel you may aswell get a 2.0 though.

I'm pretty certain i'll be getting a Focus for my first car, you can get them for 2K but personally i'll be looking more at £2500-£3000.

The interior is pretty horrible though, that's the only thing putting me off them

Just this clutch failure thing I've heard about would put me off a 2.0 but will look at the prices of the 1.8 and 2.0's anyway. Obviously I'd be looking at 8/9 year old cars for that price so they won't be perfect but I don't want it falling to bits on me haha.. My little Corsa is a T reg and has done about 20,000 miles of absolutely trouble free motoring 90% around town since I've owned it for about 18 months or so - really can't knock it even now it's on 93,000 miles

Fox you silly young boy, silver would be ideal.

I quite like the look of the interiors lol :)

I think the dark green ones look one. Silver/Black/Dark Green/Grey.

Not sure if the standard focus comes in that dark grey colour though? I've only seen focus ST's with it.

Fox, love your post count, keep it up - but yes back on topic, I think maybe I'm mistaken and it's the flywheel I'm supposed to be talking about actually lol, apologies. Is it dual mass? Prone to failure? As I say I don't know much about them and by no means am I mechanically minded :)

I can't see how it differs from that in the Mk2 Mondeo and there are certainly no issues with that. My Mk2 Mondeo is now on 153,000 miles on its original clutch.
