Decent free region-free DVD player/codec

A friend wants to play some imported DVDs on his PC that don't match our region. Has anyone got any recommendations for a decent method?

They're not illegal or in any way dodgy, just stuff that hasn't been released here.

AnyDVD will allow playback from any region. But my recommendation is back the DVD up, removing the region encoding and then you don't have to have the disc drive spinning up as you playback your film.
