Hi all,

I have decided I want to spend some money and finally get a proper up-to-date gaming system, rather than always being 2+ years behind the times!!
I actually started looking yesterday, and as usually is the case for me, I kind of chose and already justified the expense all within a few hours!!

After waiting for my forum account to be activated, I just have a few questions before pressing the confirm button!!!

Firstly, I should explain what I want from the machine.

Basically, I don't have a lot of money, but do understand after doing it for 10+ years, that spending the money in the first place really is the correct way to do it, otherwise you start from the beginning struggling.

I want a machine that will play ANY current game at pretty much full graphics and speed. But I also want it to be kinda future proof, obviously that is a relative term, but I don't know....1/2 years of still running any new game on pretty much full graphics - is that possible or am I dreaming?

On to my choice - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=FS-030-OE

What do you think of this?
I have already asked in the graphics forum about which card to go for, but of course the more thoughts the better. Not knowing a massive amount about it, I was going to go for the ATI 5870 as I expect in this case, it is the most expensive for a reason.

So if you were to build or buy a machine with a roughly £1,000 budget, would you consider this setup, with the 5870? (£1014.96 inc VAT)

Is there something better? I could build myself but from the reviews, it sounds like there isn't really a massive amount to be saved by doing it this way, and besides I would rather the OC'ers expertise in putting it together + the warranty.

Sorry for the long post, I just really want to get this right hence asking you guys as you know a lot more about it than me :D

Cheers, Rich

sorry as im not able to directly help with your system choice (im a bit behind on hardware and such) but as for your futureproofing question, i brought my machine (from overclockers, cost me around £800 pre built) little over a year ago, and most recently have been playing MW2, Borderlands, L4D2 (demo) and a few other games, at full settings with the suggested resolution for my monitor (1440x900)

so yes it is possible, but as ever it all depends what advances in gaming tech there is, but ive survived so far :)

yeah man that should do you well, i myself am buying that same system this tuesday coming, buying off the phone though so i can make a couple of changes, i'm restricting myself to a budget, thus i'm getting the 4890 as the graphics card, but i'm planning on playing at 1920x1080 and i know from benchmarks and expert advice what i've picked will be fine, so the titan gliath with the 5870 will own games, even on more than one monitor (these new 5800 series card are designed to be able to be used effectively on more than one monitor)

The pre-built in the first post only costs 1014 with the 5870 in a CM elite 335, which i'm pretty sure it won't even fit into.
Look at 95thrifles thread for some idea's.

Poontun, you mean the 5870 wouldn't physically fit in the CM 335?
Anyway, I was going to upgrade to the Antec 300 anyway, as living in Southern Spain temperatures can be a real problem and I reckon the top fan will help a lot.

Thanks a lot for the other opinions, 95thrifles I had read your excellent thread already, I saw it very early on, really useful thanks!

To be honest I haven't sorted monitor side of things yet, to begin with I will just be on a 19" but will probably get the Hanns.G HG281D 28" Widescreen when my credit card stops smouldering!!! So I guess resolution to begin with would be 1280x1024.

Glad to hear you are getting the same Scop!

I would imagine it would fit or OCUK wouldnt give the option, Good idea on different case i would recommend going for HAF 932 as it is fantastic at cooling and you may find the need for it in spain lol

I'd definitely recommend a better case.
Something along the lines of the HAF, definitely needs to be large enough while retaining great cooling.

I've ordered that very system (titan goliath i7), but with a gtx285 gfx card, antec 300 case, plus a ocz 30Gb ssd for windows 7.

Upgrading from a 6 year old compaq presario 6254 athlon xp 2200 unit...

I think this new rig is going to kick me in the nuts....

All X58 boards support xfire (99.9% sure on this - this one does anyway, not aware of any that dont) so you can either run 2 ATI in xfire or 2 NVidia in SLI

Checking out vids on youtube the 5870 fitted in the antec 900 and 902 cases, the 300 must be the same sort of size as those, the case i'm getting mine in is the antec 902.

Its a good pre-made sytem but you could save a lot of money by building it yourself ? Is this a viable option for you ?

It is viable yes, but I was under the impression that this system was pretty good value even being pre-built, I must admit I'm a bit lazy and haven't added up the component prices, but I read elsewhere that you are only paying about £100 to have it pre-built.

To be honest, I am happy to pay that for peace of mind + warranty, and of course time!

I agree with all the above, but to me 100 is a lot of money when I could do it myself. Ultimatly your choice :) it is a good machine, but double check exactly how much you would be saving before you buy. If its anymore then 150 id say build it yourself.

fair point actually, especially considering I am going to miss the weekly deal as still deciding on things, I'll get the calculator out :D
