hi ive been asked to look at spec'ing a decentish build for HD video editing -using premiere, after effects & photoshop etc.

theres no exact budget just the cheaper the better, although it is to spec an alternative to one of the high end mac pro's.

the only real suggestions and answers i need are for the cpu and the gpu.

gpu: i was asked to look at the quadro 4000 2gb which is like £800, im familiar with the name and purpose of the quadros, but ive never used one and from some very light googling it would seem to be of very little benefit over say a ~£350 3gb gtx580 or maybe a gtx680?

cpu: i have a i5 2500k myself and its a great processor, but the pc wont be overclocked and so would probably opt for the 2600k with the hyperthreading. although if the gpu was changed to a gtx 580 there would be a saving of like £450 which i thought could be put towards an ivy i7-3930k with 6 cores, would there be significant performance gains with the 3930k over the 2600k to warrant another ~£250?

thanks in advance

You don't need that many CUDA cores, the 550 might be enough for video editing but I'm not too sure on this.

On the other hand, the 2600K will definitely help with this sort of work. How much video editing does he do? If it's for work, then perhaps jumping to SB-E will be the best thing. More cores is better for this sort of stuff.
