Decent internet yet streaming TV keeps buffering...

As title really - getting a bit frustrated.

We have EE broadband, fibre to the cabinet (which is about 25 yards from our house). Download speed tests consistently give a minimum of 30mbps, sometimes 50+ depending on time of day. Ping in the ~100ms region. Streaming TV through Xbox One which is wired directly to the router.

But for some reason whatever we do, BBC iplayer, All 4, ITV player - whatever we use - can never manage more than 5 or 10 minutes before dropping out. Endless spinny wheels and “oops, something’s gone wrong” errors.

Never used to do it, but it’s been consistent for a few weeks now. As far as I can tell, nothing has changed from before in terms of setup. Any ideas?

A 100ms ping is pretty poor. How are you testing for that result?

You shouldn't have variable download speeds either. At 25 yards from the cabinet, you should be receiving your maximum possible speed all of the time. I'm several hundred metres from my cabinet and receive 60-62Mbps day and night.

What your internal setup? You need to make sure there's nothing wrong internally as a first step.

When I was on FTTC I only ever saw less than a few Mbps of variation, something wrong for your's to vary by over 20 surely. Ping sounds high as well. What router are you using? EE's? Can you log in to the router, what does it say you are synced at? Do you game? Have you tried downloading something off Steam?

+1 on this. Are you testing wirelessly?

Done a few further tests via a few different speed checkers (and yes, these are simple tests on my phone - so wireless). Things seem be around the 30-33mpbs fairly consistently now.

My pings today’s are ~10ms which is much more like it.

I’m using EE’s supplied router as it came out the box, it’s always worked with no issues and I’ve never touched it. Are the quality or platform you view the various apps on an issue? I never have any issues streaming on my phone or iPad over the wireless for example, just through the Xbox on the TV.

I have 150mb internet with virgin and I actually receive 205mb on average and I still get them problems I think it’s just there end not yours. Usually only buffers for like 20 seconds at worst tho.

Your ping is high for 100ms but you said later tests got lower ping may suggest you got some line issues.

if you never had any problems with streaming before then there are a few things to eliminate:
1) if you are connected via wifi - try a cable see if that still happens
2) if a cable still cause buffering then try a different router

if a different router still gives issues then it is definitely the line. EE will probably asks for the same thing. but they can also see your sync data. for instance, between Feb and March i had over 500 micro drop outs on my line - sync drop for less than 5s. i didn't realise for ages until one day the line was down for hours. called plusnet and they did some diagnostic and send an engineer out and turned out the master socket was causing a lot of noise and needed replacing and no more issues since. (touch wood)

I would be looking to eliminate an internal issue first. You need to try other devices and try the TV hardwired in, most likely culprit is your WiFi signal or the TV its self.

Our smart TV occasionally throws a wobblier where it refuses to even connect to any WiFi, only way to fix it is to unplug it from the mains and plug it back in.

Have you tried re-booting the router? It could be stuck on a channel with lots of interference from surrounding networks.

Re-boot TV, Re-boot router, try wired, try other devices etc.
