Im with Virgin Medias 10MB broadband package at the moment and i never get over 4MB download and never over 300kbps upload. which is not good as im always uploading big files to servers at work and vice versa.

i no where i'm located could be a problem so i got on the net looking around ISP's, and have got a few questions that you guys may be able to help with.

ADSL or cable, which one has more of a consistent speed?

do all ISP's cap your speeds if you download too much?

whats ISP's are you with and have been pleased with the service.

i've been looking at an ISP called BEThere, thye offer a download speed of up to 24MB and something which im very interested in which is an upload speed of 2.5MB. anyone with this ISP that could verify they get this kind of upload?

EDIT: BEthere also offers a Static IP on their PRO service, what does that mean for me?

Thanks for the help

Tbh i've found Virgin to be the most reliable service i've ever had. Would get cable over ADSL. I've got 50mbit and it usually works as advertised 99% of the time.

Im with o2 whos service is provided by bethere broadband. As im an o2 customer i get it for around the £10 a month mark. Its advertised at 20mbit but i get closer to 24mbit. Download speeds are constant and reliable as is the connection.

I really cant fault them, best ip ive been with tbh. Id highly recomend them.

Another O2 customer, also paying £10ish a month as I have my mobile with them too. Brilliant for the 2 months we've had them, pushes 20mbit almost any time of day for us, and reliable so far. Only a 1mbit upload, but that's not really a problem with our usage.

Only issue I've had is with the router they supply, which I've found to be poor, the wireless speeds limit the download speed - which is a nice problem to have given the terrible internet connections I've had lately, but still a pain. Otherwise, thoroughly recommended.

O2 is awesome if you can get the LLU service, if you can't then you get stuck on the Access product (BT IP STREAM) which is not worth getting..... saying that, with the rate that people are migrating away atm then the service may become usable again for other users :P

Cable.

No, but most will have a combination of usage limits and traffic shaping, or in VM's case throttling.

Telewest, VM and O2/Be. Yes, no and yes.

Yes, people with good enough lines get that kind of upload.

It means you'll have an IP address that doesn't change. Basically if you don't know you don't need one.

Unlimited has a free static ip, you just have to ask for it after it's connected. Pro gets one before it's connected.

I am with Be on their 24meg service... I get about 11MB down and 1.3MB up, but I am about 2 (wire length) miles from the telephone exchange.

I just switched from Be* to VM 20mb a few hours ago. Connected at full 20meg and downloads from usenet are solid 2.3MB/s.

When I was with be, I only conencted at 9meg. and downloads were only 950KB/s.

I'm not sure if this always happens for everyone, but the virgin engineer said the signal is so strong that he had to fit a couple of 10dB attenuators to lower the strength.

I've also been looking at a new ISP, any one here with PlusNet and if so, what are they like? They look pretty decent from their webasite and their Pro service also looks very good.

Anyone with any experience of them?

I rate virgin and o2. wud have virgin again but not on cable in my road :( so have to make do with a paltry 8mb line on o2 for £2 a month ;)

Had cable for 6/7 years now. only problems i've had is when they have upgraded me for free and i've still been using an old modem. Had to ring them up and ask for a new one.

Don't even know if you'd call that a problem. lol

Yea does happen sometimes, got one on my modem too.

I've had Virgin and Sky.

Virgin i hated, their traffic management policy annoyed the **** out of me, sky are much better, no caps/traffic shaping/throttling etc if on their unlimited plan, and im getting 19Mb down 1Mb up for £10 a month (altho you have to have sky tv to get their bb afaik).

I'm with BT and I can only get around 2.5mbps and can got upto 3mbps, but recently its always been about 2. And my area is usually slow anyway.

Never had a problem, always there when you want it.
