decent monitor to replace my CRT

Bassically i wondering what monitor to get to replace my old CRT monitor, i been having problems fidning something that is as good/better than my CRT.

the CRT i have is a:

hansol 900p monitor apox 17" and max res it can run is 1600x1200.

reson why i find a replacement is most i find have poor image compared to it and picture quality in games also.


what monitor would be a good replacement, looking between 22"-24" and between 250-350 pounds to spend.

like i said i looking for a good replacement, to match.beat my crt as she stupidly big--.-- 0.5+mtr ass..

The cheaper monitors are almost always TN panels. TN panels have good response times, but poor image quality, poor viewing angles, and some actually suffer from inverse ghosting due to overdrive.

The two more expensive monitors you linked to up there both have VA panels. VA panels have decent response times, good blacks, good image quality and good viewing angles.

IPS panels are arguably the best for image quality, and are probably the best for colour critical work, although they don't have quite as good dark colours as VA panels. Not sure on response times for these.

If you are coming from a good CRT, I would recommend looking for a VA or IPS panel.

I have the NEC 24WMGX3. It's an absolutely fantastic monitor, and beats the pants off any CRT I've seen, although I've never seen a high quality CRT such as an FW900, so comparing a good quality LCD to a poor quality CRT isn't really fair. The response times and input lag on it are very good, and can be reduced further using the through mode. Image quality and viewing angles are great, and it comes with a remote which is handy for the OSD.

The Dell 2408WFP apparently is better for colour reproduction, although the original A00 revision suffered from very poor response times (50ms+). This has been fixed with the later revisions, and I reckon if you bought now, you'd be almost guaranteed to get an A01 revision or later.

Don't ever buy on contrast ratio. All these 3000, 5000, 10,000+ are all dynamic contrasts, which means adjusting the backlight. In a regular CCFL lit monitor, this means dimming or brightening the entire screen, which means if you had black AND white on at the same time, you would get nowhere near the same whites and blacks as if you had the entire screen just one colour. Now if you bought an LED lit monitor (such as the Dell G2410), the backlighting can be adjusted in different places, so dynamic contrast CAN work there (which is why it has a "1,000,000:1" ratio), but you should still be looking at panel types, image quality, and reviews, before contrast ratio.

thanks for clearing that up i was wondering about that million :1 monitor and wondered how on earth they got such results.

if i was to choose between these two, which ones would be better?

they both good price but after what you said about contrasting, i wonder now which one would be better, are they TN or VA or IPS?

lastly im sure overclockers hasnt listed all the monitors ofc, but i wonder if i was to increase budget to around 350-450 would it really be worth investing in something like the NEC over those two samsung models in the long term, as i know monitors tend to jump tech wise very quickly and such wouldnt want to waste money.

ie HD DVD vs blue ray= blue ray won HD dvd waste of money if you got a HD dvd player.

i been looking at the dell and NEC as like many have said going for a TN wouldnt be worth it over my current CRT.

but i must admit dell pricing is rather screwed up.

in reveiws it was for around 350ish yet now selling for over 400 quid, and they saying "now with VAT saving" lol i feel that dell is just over priced atm tbh.

nec looks like a good bet, but still wondering if there are other monitors i have missed and need to look at.
 
600 quid just pushing it to much for me personally:)
it seems the NEC get good reveiws compared to the dell which keeps having a niggle or a glitch issue/ the price jumps like a jack in a box which i dont like.


looking at the NEC i wondering those who have got it what exactly are your reveiws for it and have you got any pictures of it?

i tried the oc forum reveiw section but could only find very old reveiws of old monitors not many newer ones reveiwed.

was reading that site, good withs lots of info, another monitor which he said was good was the HP LP2475W, but then i wonder if it worth the extra money, and weather the NEC be a better gaming machine monitor .
