Really does sound like your hammering it to only be getting 20-28 on a 20 mile commute.

I have essentially the same engine in my Octavia and my lowest tanks come out at 27-28MPG and my commute is barely 5 miles each way which I would expect to hammer the tank (see fuelly below)

Fabia Vrs. It’s not going to blow your mind but with a remap it’s quick enough with bags of torque and I average somewhere around 50mpg without trying too hard or driving like a granny.

You won't loose much putting miles on a mk5 gti and they aren't exactly uneconomical for a 200bhp car.
