My sister and her husband are looking for somewhere to live. Main criteria is that it has to be convenient to commute to both Manchester and Leeds and have a train station nearby, and not be a dump :p . They're currently looking in the Calder Valley area but not having much look finding anything. Budget is around £150-180k and they want a house I think. Any advice?

Longwood or Golcar in Huddersfield, right next to M62 and only a few miles from actual Huddersfield town, I moved to longwood for the same reason you have said, I work in Manchester and the missus works in Leeds so it's perfect for us.

Salendine nook in Huddersfield is not bad also

Holmfirth? Or Meltham? Very picturesque, pace of life would make you feel like you'd lived forever!

Cheers for that (and other serious suggestions). I put Holmfirth into rightmove and it came up with a property in a place called "Netherthong". My sis will love that - Brilliant :D

Todmorden, pretty much half way and has a train station on the Leeds > Manchester trainline? Or just a little bit out of todmorden, gauxholme or the other way, Cliviger / Holme Chapel.

Or if they want more for their money and dont mind driving 5-6 miles over an NSL road to the train station, or getting the bus to the train station, there are nice parts of Bacup and £180k will get you a 3/4 bed detached.

I live in Bacup, and as long as you stay away from the terraced area in the centre and more out to the countryside it's very nice and peaceful.

Sorry, I don't normally go for a trhead revival but I've been offline for ages and I just saw this, couldn't help myself, I grew up in Longwood!

From birth to 1998 (21 years) and my folks still live there, longwood gate to be precise, pretty much next to the slip in (lol) and yeah, it's ok :)

Lots of nice places in west Yorkshire, it just depends if you have any other requirements. Try around Hebden Bridge.
