Can anyone recommend a decent programme for stopping Trojans etc getting on my PC. I'm currently running AVG free and Zonealarm free on XP SP2 which is kept up to date. While my main machine has been ok the machine the kids use more, mainly for Messenger, has been breached.

I have installed Prevx2.0, after the event!, and that has not been able to clear the problem I think mainly because the Trojans have screwed up my Zonealarm settings so Prevx can not access the net to verify the files it finds. If I turn Zonealarm off so it can access the net I get lots of other nasties which my AVG picks up. Anyway I think I will do a format and reinstall but want to stop it happening again!

Also it was a Tibs Trojan and I see on the net that this is a nasty one that can get passwords etc???

not sure what to say, with zonealarm ive never even had someone attempt to attack my pc but i have a router which blocks it all anyway so im not too worried about viruses, i just use zonealarm + avg... install noscript to firefox, that stops sites installing stuff. no offense but im guessing someone downloaded something because im pretty sure theres no way to send a virus to a firewall'ed pc.

Yeah this'll work.

A PC with a decent AV and FW and some Spyware Blaster or Spybot (immunisation features) should be fairly well protected.

Throw AdAware into the mix and I've never had a problem since!. I also have the M$ Spyware Software too!!, Never be too secure!!..

Or just ditch Windows and install Linux! :D (I Dual boot to Ubuntu!!)

I've used Ad-Aware for a white but recently I've decided it doesn't do much for me and dumped it.

As for M$ Spyware ;).

Hoping to build a Linux box before Uni starts again in September. It'll be Ubuntu and perhaps also Fedora I use.

Thanks for all the replies. I suspect the problem arose when my daughter clicked on a link or a file?

Is their one decent package that deals with everything or is it better to use different products for Viruses, Spyware, Malaware etc?

Edit: Just remembered I never installed Spybot S and D on the second PC so its not been "immunised". Would that have stopped the Tibs Trojan? It's installed on my main PC and no problems there so far!

Kaspersky do an all-in-one product I believe.

However something like NOD32 + Sunbelt Kerio + SpywareBlaster + Firefox = Safety. :)

consider giving them a guest account only rather than an admin account if thats what they have at the moment.

More work for you unfortunately as you will have to install stuff for them but it may stop some nasties installing themselves.

As said perhaps linux if they just use it for msn etc? You are pretty stuck with xp when the kids are clicking on anything and everything.

I use spybot as well as spywareblaster, it's free and updates are about once a week. (don't think it's a set interval it is free after all :) )

Spybot can help to immunise but also will scan to find trojans, spyware etc. May not always be able to remove everything but none of the other anti-spyware software can remove everything out there either.
