OK people

A freind bought an Xbox 360 wireless adaptor... but he doesn't have a wireless network DOH!

Anyway he asked me and I said he should get a Linksys WRT 54GL and I'd flash it with DDWRT or tomato and sort him out with QoS and connections for his torrents. . (Currently he just has a modem plugged straight into his PC.)

When he downloads, he can't browse the web and the PC slows down etc...

Anyway I said that would be the best but he's umming and ahhing at the cost - another £50 on top of the £50 he just spent.

Any other suggestions?

I offered to wire him up with cat 5 and a router I have here but he doesn't want wires either... <sigh>

I told him if he want's it to work and be rock solid that's what you need and £50 ain't all that much, but you know how it is...

when i have people who ask for my help and then ignore me, i tell them "you asked for my help, i told you what to do. if you won't do it, i can't help you"

usually sorts the problem out :)

I gave up on wireless a while ago now. It's just not reliable enough for me.
I went out a bought a Netgear HD powerline kit for £85 and I've never looked back. Rock solid connection. Happy days :)

In my opinion the WRT54GS/GL would be fine, and if he's whining about additional cost it's his own fault for buying a £50 wifi kit for an Xbox without reading what it actually does.
He should be thankful you're helping him at all.
Don't doubt your recommendations, be firm with idiots! it's the only way they learn.

From 5 years in IT support I have learned that the only way to deal with people who umm and arr is not to give them an option. Just Tell them "you need that one, buy that one" Else they'll sit there trying to decide what's best between two things they don't understand. Much like me looking at two bags of compost and trying to figure out which is better for tulips.
