After my various threads on which car to go and test driving several I finally picked one.
Last week my father passed away and I decided to cheer myself up with some retail therapy. It was a tough choice between Audi, Porsche or BMW.
They were my fathers favourite marques and since I can remember he has owned one of those 3.
He was one of the first people in the UK to take deliver of an Ur Quattro which I have fond memories of. When we were younger he used to load the car up and me, my brother and mum would drive from the UK to south Italy, I can still remember my mum shouting at him for driving to fast around the corners :D He loved it so much he had a further two. He also owned 911's and some BMW M cars including an E34 M5 3.8. He was the whole reason I take an interest in cars and I decided to treat myself after working my butt off for 2 years abroad.
I test drove a few cars but decided to go for the M3. I know he'd be pleased as the last car he owned was an E46 M3. I loved the RS4 but in the end wasn't sold on the looks, I also loved the 911 of course but couldn't get what I wanted in my budget. I liked the S5 compared to the others it was out of the question, just too slow and unresponsive.
I bought it privately and got a good price on it. Its space grey with novillo black leather. Standard E92 M3 spec with the following options:
EDC
19" wheels
Folding mirrors
Comfort access
Rear blind
Heated seats
Adaptive headlights
High beam assistance
BMW assist & online
Voice control
Bluetooth phone prep and telematics
6 disc CD changer
Hi Fi professional DSP (Logic 7)
High gloss shadow line

The only other option I wish it had was the USB input, but I can live without it. Ive seen retrofit options too but they're pricey. He also had the wheels refurbished in gloss black. At first I didn't think I would like them from looking at the picture but I have really taken to them. He removed the chrome front grille and the chrome side repeaters, which I think looks much better.
The exhaust is a custom made one from this guy

I will post a video up soon but its massive improvement over standard. Not overly loud in town or on the motorway but sounds deep and will snarl when you put your foot down.

So far I am of course loving it. Still havent worked out all the options in the idrive, but have set the M button to max attack mode :D You can throw it around corners and the tail will step out, but its so controllable. I did a run from Reading to Watford today and it returned 26mpg, which I thought was very reasonable.

Heres some quick pictures I took just now. I will take more when its clean and do a video of the exhaust. Enjoy. I hope to make it along to a meet or an RR day if I am in the country.

Thanks for the kind word everyone. As for the black wheels, I was totally not sold on them before seeing the car as the pics dont do them justice, but I think you have to see them in the flesh to appreciate them.
I really want some of those competition pack alloys that look the same/similar to the CSL wheels.

None left but taken out a BMW insured warranty at £110 per month. Cover wont start until 30 days after purchasing the warranty.

Cool to hear about somebody who has actually done this. Did you go for the zero excess product?

Yep, it doesnt make that much difference going from £100 excess to zero so it made sense, especially on a car that has the potential to throw some big bills.

Just been out this evening and had a fast drive on the way home. I cant believe how much faster this car is compared to the E46

Thought they would be around that. Thats a hell of lot, maybe in a few months, or if I can find a buyer for the originals.

The wrong side of £3k? Im having second thoughts now....

It set me back £25k, which I thought was a fair price. Not a huge steal but a fair price.

Make sure you've opted to pay monthly for the warranty given its on 58k. Then you get the sub 60k price for as long as you pay monthly :)

I thought that too but on the BMW website it says "BMW promise not to change the price within the first 12 months".
I have already applied for the warranty on the pay monthly option :)

The fuel filler cap says "use 95 - 98 RON fuel only".

What are the implications of using standard unleaded, and what if I use 99 RON fuel?

I always use super in all my cars, but just wondered because on most performance cars they usually say use nothing except super.

I had no idea what high gloss shadowline was until now either :o

Just went and had a look and it does look quite good, a lot better than the dull grey plastic most cars have. Cheers!
