Well, I got 500 quid laying there waiting to be spent. I've been told many times to hold off until the 590/6990 comes out... but I've held my client waiting for a while now, and can't work with my broken 4870x2. I've also read a lot that the drivers might be poor, and that it'd be better off just grabbing a 580 or xfire 6950's... I'm not going with ATI this time because of some support problems for a smulator called Flight sim x.

So , what do you say, wait for 590, or buy some current cards out now? rumors say feb, some say ceBIT, I don't know but the wait is getting really stretchy.

So, let me set this straight. Fligh Sim X is not that GPU dependant but if he prefers nVidia for around 370/380 he can get a 580 which is the best GPU you can buy. More elegant than 2 560s and better mins.

All depends at the resolution he plays though. Does he use 3 screens?

I'd say wait and see what the next big nVidia card will bring to the table. Unless you really want something now.

If so, go for the 580.

Well the BETA Nvidia drivers had support for the 590 GTX which were quickly taken back down, so it's coming shortly.

Flight Sim X really takes a hit on your first core, but with ATI cards they render the clouds in the game horribly hitting 15 fps with a 5970... Even with shader 3.0 mod, it just doesn't run as smoothly as an nvidia card would.

I play a lot of games, all the latest and the best. But FSX is a huge part of the reason I even own a PC, so performance on it is critical for me. I also do video editing across multiple monitors, really performance out of the nvidia card is very important for me, so hearing that the 590 is going to boost performance a lot might make me wait.. but I'm just really unsettled, i don't want to be dissapointed when it comes out if I get the 580.

It is worth waiting for the HD6990 to be released as the high end Nvidia prices will probably need to fall by a decent amount.

FSX only uses a single core on graphics cards.. So the most powerful single core card you want to buy, so in this case a GTX 580 with 3Gb ram is perfect. Also I use a ATI 5870 and it works with no problems if you know how to edit the FSX config file and use mods that are not flaky. Dual GPU or SLI/Crossfire are a waste on FSX, best upgrage for FSX is a faster CPU, it loves high MHz.. Just google or check out the FSX forums. I even added some links in other posts regarding how to make FSX perform better regarding hardware.

Read what I said in these threads also some links there showing how FSX reacts to certain conditions regarding hardware.

I understand all that, the reason it loves MHz is because it loves to use the first core. The higher clock on the first, the better. If you use Shader 3.0 on **some** ati cards, it may run perfectly smooth. But I want it out of the box, the 3GB version is apparently loud and hotter, that's why I'm considering waiting.
